Abstract A treaty in 1856 allowed missionaries to enter Japan. The Reformed Church was among the first to begin evangelizing in Japan. Prominent early leaders were Guido Verbeck and James Ballagh. The Church of Christ in Japan was erected in 1875; numerous institutions followed. WW II severely interrupted missionary activity, though the Japan Mission is still active.
