The Samuel O. Mast Papers include one background file which contains biographical information, photographs, and correspondences. The rest of the collection contains scientific journals that he wrote, and correspondence between Dr. Donald Cronkite and others concerning gathering of Mast’s publications for the creation of a collection at Hope College.

Biography

Samuel Ottmar Mast was born on October 5, 1871, in Washtenaw County. He graduated from Ypsilanti State Normal College in 1897 and from the University of Michigan in 1899. He also earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1906, and in 1907 he went on to John Hopkins University as a Johnson Scholar. After that, he started teaching at Goucher College and Hope College. In 1908, Samuel Ottmar Mast married Grace Rebecca Tennent, and they had three daughters. In 1911, Samuel O. Mast returned to John Hopkins and was there until his death on February 3, 1947. He held the position of Professor of Zoology, Head of the Department, and Director of Zoology Laboratory. In 1909, Mast was honored by Columbia University in his selection as winner of the Cartwright Prize and in 1919 Michigan State Normal granted him M.Pd. degree.

Samuel O. Mast was associated with Fellowship with the A.A.A.S. membership in the Society of Zoologists, American Physiological Academy of Science of Naturalists, the Academy of Science of Philadelphia, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi.

Background file from 1910-1981, which includes correspondence and a diary, a copy of Samuel's father's diary from Germany to America, and correspondence between Dr. Donald Cronkite and others concerning gathering of Mast's publications for the creation of a collection at Hope College.
