Scope and Contents

The Harry F. Frissel Papers include biographical information, articles that he has written, and correspondence with other Hope College faculty members. Also included in the collection is a copy of a Physics Dept. Grant proposal for Nuclear Equipment, news releases about Frissel's accomplishments while at Hope College, and several photographs of Frissel. The collection is arranged alphabetically by topical heading.

Biography

Born Arie Willem Frissel in Boskoop, the Netherlands, he immigrated to the United States in 1921, settling with his family in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1942, Harry F. Frissel graduated from Hope College with a B.A. in Mathematics. He earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Physics from Iowa State University while working on the first computer, the Atanasoff-Berry machine.

From 1943-1948, Frissel worked as a research associate in Cornell’s Aeronautical Lab. Frissel’s professional affiliations included the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Scientific Association.

In 1948, Frissel joined the faculty of Hope College as a Physics professor, where he served 12 years as department chairperson. After teaching physics at Hope for over 35 years, Harry F. Frissel retired in 1985. In retirement, he helped establish the Hope Academy of Senior Professionals (HASP).

Harry F. Frissel passed away on March 18, 2000, at the age of 79.
