Scope and Contents

The D. Ivan Dykstra papers consist primarily of lectures and manuscripts written during his tenure as professor of philosophy at Hope College from 1947 to 1980. The lecture series includes addresses and a tribute to A. J. Muste. The collection also includes some articles, book reviews, correspondence, photographs of Dr. Dykstra, and his professional memoirs.

Biography

D. Ivan Dykstra, Ph.D., is professor emeritus of philosophy at Hope College, where he began his teaching career in 1947. Originally a professor of Greek, Dykstra moved to the department of philosophy in 1950. He retired from teaching in 1980.

A native of South Dakota, Dykstra grew up in Iowa and graduated from Hope College in 1935. He was awarded the bachelor of theology degree from Western Theological Seminary in 1938, and received his Ph.D. in theology from Yale University in 1945. He was chairman of the department of philosophy from 1950-1977. His special interests have been focused on the history of philosophy and the philosophy of science. In 1970, he received one of Hope's first Distinguished Alumnus Awards and in 1979 was awarded the Hope Outstanding Professor-Educator Award. D. Ivan Dykstra died on Sunday, February 28, 1999, at age 83.
