Biography

Adelaide Dykhuizen and her twin, Geraldine, were born in 1905 in Chicago where they attended Austin High School. After the death of their father, their uncle Edward D. Dimnent took the family into his home. The children’s mother became his hostess for Hope College events. The twins and their younger brother Harold all attended Hope College. Adelaide and Geraldine were members of the Delphi Sorority. During the spring of their senior year, Geraldine was president and Adelaide vice-president of the society. Both girls received degrees in Modern Language-English and graduated in June of 1926. By this time, Harold had started his college years at Hope and in 1930 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Adelaide and Geraldine each taught school for many years. Adelaide spent nine years at Hope Preparatory and thirty-three years at E. E. Fell Junior High School teaching English, French, and History. Geraldine taught English at the Grand Haven Public Schools for over thirty years. In addition to teaching, both women were active members of Hope Church and involved in the Second Century Club, Holland Garden Club, Holland League of Women Voters, and the American Auxiliary of University Women. Adelaide was also influential in the Holland Teacher’s Organization. Geraldine participated in the Meals on Wheels program, and the Holland Historical Society as well.
