Scope and Contents

The Robert W. Cavanaugh Papers are arranged alphabetically by topical heading. The Correspondence series includes many letters from former students who clearly admired Cavanaugh's teaching and directing. The Post-Graduate Education series includes grades (RESTRICTED) and course notes that Cavanaugh received while studying for his doctorate degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Many of Cavanaugh’s writings are contained in the Manuscripts series. The collection is rounded out by a series of Photographs primarily of Cavanaugh and the Hope College Chapel Choir.

Biography

Robert W. Cavanaugh received his A.B. degree from the University of Wisconsin (1937). He later studied at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and received a Bachelor of Music degree (1939) and a Master of Music degree (1940). In 1940 Cavanaugh joined the faculty of Hope College. He left Hope in 1943 to serve as lieutenant in the United States Navy, and returned to Hope in 1946. Cavanaugh was admitted to candidacy for his doctorate of musicology at The University of Michigan in the summer of 1950 and received his doctorate in the spring of 1953. Cavanaugh remained at Hope College until his death in 1976.

Collection includes correspondence, a microfilm copy of his doctoral dissertation (published copy available in music library), manuscripts concerning various aspects of music, and photographs of Cavanaugh and the Hope College Chapel Choir.
