Scope and Contents

The Victor J.W. Blekkink papers consist primarily of photographs of the family, various clippings about Victor and an untitled manuscript on the life of Jesus Christ. Taken in tandem with the Evert Blekkink collection (W88-0011), this material documents the work of two prominent men in the history of the Reformed Church in New York and New Jersey. Materials have been arranged alphabetically into four main series: Clippings, Objects, Papers, and Photographs.

Biography

Victor John W. Blekkink was born to Evert and Hattie Blekkink in 1887 in Lisha’s Kill, New York. Blekkink graduated from Hope College in 1909 and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1912. Blekkink was also licensed and ordained in 1912. He received an honorary doctorate from Hope in 1936.

Blekkink married Agnes Stopelkamp in Holland, Michigan, at Third Reformed Church in 1913. They had no children and his wife died in 1954. He served only three pastorates during his life: Long Branch, New Jersey (1912-1914), Canajoharie, New York (1914-1922), and Cohoes, New York (1922-1962). In 1920-1921, he served as president of the Particular Synod of Albany.
