Biography

Herman van der Ploeg was born in Zyldijk, province of Groningen, the Netherlands on November 19, 1862. After immigrating to America, he attended Hope College and graduated with the class of 1892. He then attended Western Theological Seminary (WTS) and graduated with the class of 1895. He was licensed by Classis of Holland in 1895 and ordained by the Classis of Grand River that same year. He served as a minister in the Reformed Church in America (RCA) for congregations at New Era, Michigan (1895-1900); Coopersville, Michigan (1900-1904); Luctor, Kansas (1904-1908); Prairie View, Kansas (1904-1908); East Overisel, Michigan (1911-1914); Litchville, North Dakota (1914-1918); Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin (1918-1919); Newton Zion, Fenton, Illinois (1919-1922); Hope, Detroit, Michigan (1922-1924); and North Blendon, Michigan (1924-1928). He also served as a missionary for the Classis of Iowa (1908-1911) and the Classis of Chicago (1928-1930).

Herman van der Ploeg died in San Jose, California, on September 23, 1953.

His father, Harmen van der Ploeg, was born January 26, 1841, in Zandt, province of Groningen, the Netherlands. He, too, immigrated to America and attended Hope College where he graduated with the class of 1874. He attended and graduated from Western Theological Seminary (WTS) with the class of 1877. He was licensed by Classis of Holland and ordained by the Classis of Grand River both in 1877. He served as a minister in the RCA at Fremont, Michigan (1877-1878); Greenleafton, Minnesota (1878-1882); and Fulton, Illinois (1890-1893).

Harmen van der Ploeg died in 1893 in Orange City, Iowa, at the age of forty-two.
