Biography
Delbert J. Vander Haar was born on April 20, 1923, in Holland, Michigan, to Walter and Mrs. Vander Haar. He received his A.B. degree from Hope College in 1944, a B.D. degree from Western Theological Seminary in 1947, and a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University in California.
After graduating from seminary, he was licensed by the Classis of Holland, Michigan, and ordained into the Reformed Church in America (RCA) by the Classis of Illinois. He served as a pastor for Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, Illinois, from 1947-1953 and Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa, from 1953-1960. He also served as co-director of Youth Work for the RCA from 1960-1968, secretary of Western Regional Service & Family Life Ministries from 1969-1973, Regional Service from 1973-1981, and Stewardship Development office from 1982-1989. He also had served as treasurer of the International Christian Youth Exchange.
In 1989, Vander Haar returned to the pulpit as the pastor for Yokohama Union in Yokohama, Japan, from 1989-1991 and completed his ministerial tenure as an assistant minister of pastoral care at Hope Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan, from 1993-1998. In 1998, he and his wife, Trudy, received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award.
Vander Haar passed away in Holland, Michigan, on November 15, 2006. He is buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland.
