Scope and Contents

The Van Raalte Hall Cornerstone records consist of items from 1893 to 1902, with the addition of an inventory completed in 1980. Materials include books, newspapers, programs, catalogues, articles, and directories. The collection addresses a wide range of subjects.

The materials have been maintained in their original order, three books followed by eight topical groupings which are in no particular order. These groupings and their order are as follows: Hope College; Western Theological Seminary; the (RCA) academies; city public schools; churches and missions; the Semi-Centennial Celebration; Holland city, Holland harbor and the parks; and newspapers.

History

The ceremonial laying of the cornerstone took place on June 18, 1902. The cornerstone was opened on June 11, 1980, after a fire burned down the building in April of that same year. The initial inventory of materials was done by Elton Bruins.
