Biography

Adrian Frederick Zwemer was born on July 24, 1902, in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, to Rev. Frederick James Zwemer and Anna Klumper Zwemer, while his father was serving as pastor for two Reformed Church in America congregations at the same time, one in Sheboygan Falls and the other in nearby Hingham. While in living in Holland, Rev. Zwemer (1903) passed away leaving his widow and young Adrian.

Adrian attended the Holland public school system until entering the Hope College Preparatory School in 1917 at the age of 15 years. He graduated from the Preparatory School in 1921 and entered Hope College the following fall. While at Hope College, he was a member of the Knickerbocker Society (fraternity), Science Course, Men’s Glee Club and Pre-Medic Club. After graduating from Hope College, he earned a teaching certificate from Michigan State Teachers College. He married Mary Crouch (Hope College class of 1927 graduate) in 1929. He also earned a master’s degree from Michigan State University and continued graduate work at New York State Teachers College in Albany and at Northwestern University. His professional teaching career took him to Bay City, Michigan, for 18 years and Lowell, Michigan, for a similar amount of time.

Adrian F. Zwemer passed away in Bay City on August 5, 1961, at the age of 61 years, leaving his widow and a daughter and son.
