Scope and Contents
The Gerrit Van Zyl Papers include materials from his tenure as a chemistry professor at Hope College. The collection is arranged alphabetically by topical heading with the exception of the photographs, which are located at the end. Please note that Van Zyl's personnel file is RESTRICTED. Of special interest is a proposal for a three-year institutional grant to improve quality of instruction in the physics and chemistry departments at Hope College. A large part of the collection consists of photographs of chemistry majors, which are arranged by year. The articles are arranged alphabetically by the title and reflect his areas of research.

Biography
Gerrit Van Zyl received his A.B. from Hope College in 1918, and his M.S. (1921) and his Ph.D. (1924) from the University of Michigan. In 1952, he received an honorary Sc.D. from Hamlin University. Van Zyl joined the faculty of Hope College in 1923 as a professor of chemistry. He was an active member in the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Sigma Xi (National Honorary), Phi Lambda Upsilon (National Chemical), and Gamma Alpha (University of Michigan Chapter). In 1955, Van Zyl received the Scientific Apparatus Makers Award in Chemical Education. In 1957, he was elected to a Fellowship in the New York Academy of Science, and in 1962 he was named one of the six outstanding college chemistry teachers in the U.S. He retired from Hope College in 1964. In 1967, Gerrit Van Zyl passed away, leaving a wife and four children.
