Scope and Contents

The William Vander Lugt papers are arranged alphabetically by topical heading. Correspondence includes some personal correspondence, but primarily letters received and carbon copies of letters written in response between the years 1953 and 1971. Speeches and articles written from 1957-1971 are included. Some Hope College faculty programs and notices from 1955-1971 are also included. His 1932 grade report from the University of Michigan graduate school is RESTRICTED.

Biography

William Vander Lugt, son of Teunis Vander Lugt, was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on July 1, 1902. He came to the United States in 1905 at the age of three. He graduated from Calvin Preparatory School before attending Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At Calvin College, he earned an A.B. degree in 1927. He studied at the University of Michigan from 1928-1932, receiving both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in 1929 and 1932. Vander Lugt taught at Western Academy in Hull, Iowa; served as professor of philosophy at Central College in Pella, Iowa; and served as dean of instruction and professor of philosophy at Westminister College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He also served as a visiting professor at several other universities, including the University of Michigan (1932-1933), Central College (1934-1950), University of Indiana (1945), Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico (1949), Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania (1950-1953), and Pennsylvania State College (1954-1955). Vander Lugt was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Literature degree from Central College in 1950.

Dr. Vander Lugt came to Hope College in 1954 as a professor of psychology. Later, he became a professor of philosophy. He was elected as dean of the college in 1955, a distinguished professor-at-large in 1966, and interim dean for academic affairs from 1967-1968. He also served Hope College as chancellor from 1970-1972, between the presidencies of Calvin Vander Werf and Gordon Van Wylen. He retired in 1972 and was granted emeritation.

William Vander Lugt died in Holland, Michigan, in 1992.
