The Alvin Wallace Vanderbush Papers include his personnel file which is RESTRICTED, photographs, and correspondence. The collection includes a file on the first nationally televised college course in the social science field called Continental Classroom. The collection is arranged alphabetically by topical heading.

Biography
Born September 16, 1907, in Baldwin, Wisconsin, Alvin Wallace Vanderbush received his A.B from Hope College in 1929 and his M.A from University of Michigan in 1938. In 1945, he joined the faculty at Hope College as a history and political science professor and coach. Before teaching at Hope, Vanderbush had served with the U.S Navy. After completing 25 years of coaching in 1955, he retired from athletics, but continued to teach history and political science. In 1965, he received the Senior’s Hope Award, and retired from teaching in 1972.
Alvin Vanderbush died on February 20, 2005, in Bloomington, Minnesota, at the age of 97.

Abstract
Hope College class of 1929; coach and director of athletics, 1945-1960; professor of history and political science, 1945-1972; award in his name established in 1999 "for recognition a staff or faculty member who make extraordinary contributions to the lives of students above and beyond what could be expected in their regular assignments in academic or administrative positions." The collection contains his personnel file (RESTRICTED), photographs, correspondence, Lions Club materials, Political Science Department Alumni Newsletter, paper on the need for better athletic facilities, and materials for Continental Classroom, a nationwide government class.
