Scope and Contents
The Henry J. Steffens papers have been arranged alphabetically by topical heading. Correspondence is primarily letters received and carbon copies of letters written in response during the years 1953-1956 and only deals with letters B through H. Hope College materials are reports to the Board of Trustees (1953-1956), Investment Committee reports (1952-1962), and scholarship accounts (1947-1961). The collection also includes Margaret Steffens’ 2003 obituary and a 2006 oral history interview with Steffens' daughter, Gretchen Steffens Robert, concerning her father’s time at Hope College.

Biography
Henry Steffens was born in Holland, Michigan on March 8, 1908, to George and Mrs. Steffens. George was a local banker. Henry attended Holland Public Schools and graduated from Hope College in 1930. He later received a M.A. degree from Northwestern University. He was employed as a banker and supervisor for the Michigan Unemployment Compensation Commission. Steffens was treasurer of Hope College for 23 years from 1946-1968, during the time when enrollment climbed rapidly and the campus expanded. He also served as a Holland City councilman for 10 years and as Mayor-Pro-Tem, member of the Holland Rotary Club and as a board member of Resthaven, Inc.
Henry J. Steffens died in Holland, Michigan on November 20, 1992.
