Biography

Henry Ivar (Bud) Shaw, Jr., was born on June 29, 1926, in Yonkers, New York. He attended The Citadel School in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1943-1944, majoring in civil engineering. In 1944, Shaw enlisted in United States Marine Corps and for 29 months was a field telephone lineman in the First Marine Division during World War II. In 1946, Henry attended Hope College. During his time at Hope, he was a machine gun platoon Sergeant in the Michigan National Guard (1947-1949). He graduated from Hope College in 1949 with a B.A. in history and Cum Laude honors. Shaw married Juanita Hubble, a student at Hope College for two years. Together they had four sons: Marc, Brooke, Drake, and Pierce.

After Hope, he attended Columbia University where he obtained his master’s in history (1949-1950). He was in the processes of obtaining a doctorate in British military history at Columbia University, but reenlisted in the United States Marine Corps when the conflict with Korea arose. After a year (1950-1951) of stateside service at Quantico as an infantry squad leader and editorial assistant of the Marine Corps Gazette, Shaw was discharged.

In 1951, he was offered a job by the military and went right to work for the Military Historical Branch as a research-historian. Shaw received the United States Marine Corps Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1954 for his work in military history. In 1962, he was promoted to Chief Historian. He was active in many military historical societies in the U.S. and England, and he became editor of the Military Collector and Historian. On October 14, 1963, the United States Marine Corps, Department of the Navy, commended Henry for his superior civilian service. He received this award/medal for his help with the Marine Corps public information program, his work as chief editor/writer for the Marine Corps Historical Branch, and for his publications of high caliber, recognized by leading literary authorities. He again received this award in 1967. From 1969-1971, Shaw was the Deputy Director of Marine Corps History.

In the spring of 1972, Hope College departments invited back alumni that were distinguished in their profession to speak to students to stimulate interest and thinking. Shaw was invited back to speak to the history department March 19-24, 1972.

Some of Shaw’s works include: Okinawa: Victory in the Pacific, The U.S. Marine Corps Operations in World War II, Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal, and Isolation of Rabaul.

Henry I. Shaw passed away on June 1, 2000.
