Scope and Contents

The papers of Rev. Arnold Dykhuizen contain primarily sermon notes and course materials from both Princeton Theological Seminary and Western Theological Seminary. The notes are for sermons preached from 1936–1994 and include records of dates preached, as well as relevant materials (including church publications and newspaper clippings). Course materials include notes, study guides, and graded assignments from several of Rev. Dykhuizen’s seminary courses.

The collection also includes several issues of Reformed Church in America publications, My Father’s Business and Our Church At Work. Also included are lecture notes, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, a financial report, and a program and correspondence pertaining to Rev. Cornelius Dykhuizen, the brother of Rev. Arnold Dykhuizen. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material. The sermon notes are arranged by order of dates first preached, and the course materials are arranged alphabetically under their respective institutions.

Biography

The Rev. Arnold Eugene Dykhuizen graduated from Hope College in 1931 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1934. He was ordained in Stone Arabia, New York, also the location of his first pastoral position. From there he went on to pastor churches in Sprakers, Johnstown and Marion, New York; Chicago; Detroit; Holland, Nebraska; and Waupun, Wisconsin. At his retirement in 1984, he served as calling pastor at First Reformed Church in Holland.

Born in Jamestown, Dykhuizen lived in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, and Fremont and graduated from Annville Institute in Kentucky. He served on the Board of Trustees for Hope College; as President of the regional synods of Albany, New York, and Chicago; and on the RCA’s Board of World Missions. Arnold Dykhuizen died on Thursday, April 16, 1998, at age 87.
